On at least a few occasions in the last couple of weeks I have been told that I need to “let it go and embrace the country’s president – for the good of the country.” One added “All this divisiveness is not good for our image globally and it is hurting us internally. He was elected and you need to support him.”
Essentially, what you are saying is that I need to accept and “embrace” the behavior of a man that exemplifies all that is wrong with our country and the womanizers, bigots, racists, homophobes and xenophobes that he and a good majority of the GOP seem to support – “for the good of the country and our global image.”
I would argue the opposite. By NOT accepting his behavior and the groups he seems to associate strongly with I am sending a message to the people of this country and others that I support equality and acceptance for all people. A message that we’re not all narcissistic, lying ass hats with a penchant for assaulting women and proclaiming old, white, rich guys as the master race.
I am not going to accept him and “leave him alone” because he won the election…that’s not how it works in this country. “Accept him because he won” is something that is said in dictatorships – not a democratic society. In a free society we are free to criticize and protest our leaders by whatever non violent, legal means we choose.
